The Need

Dotted Line Icon

The prolonged conflict for nearly 30 years in Kashmir has impacted the lives of millions of children. J&K is consistently one of the worst performing states in student learning outcomes. Pratham’s ASER 2018 findings reveal 94% class 3 students cannot read level 2 text while 45.2% cannot do subtraction, 75% class 5th students cannot read level 2 text and 86% cannot do division. Unfortunately, there remains a significant gap in achievement of learning outcomes between the privileged and the not so privileged.

Our Response

Dotted Line Icon

Our Quality Education program strives to bridge this gap through interventions that integrate the teacher, parent and the community and that use technology where appropriate. We work with low-resource government schools in collaboration with DOSE (Department of School Education) to transform schools and assist in the holistic development of children. This is accomplished through initiatives such as remedial education, community mobilization, capacity building of teachers, technology enabled learning and building modern infrastructure in schools.

    Quality Education Program Documentary

Learn about our Quality Education Program. This program is focused on improving the quality of education in schools and children towards regular schooling by transforming government schools in the most remote areas of J&K. We identify challenges and loopholes in the systems that are negatively impacting the quality of education in the schools and the competency level of teachers and students. We use a comprehensive and sequential strategy which involves improvement and capacity enhancement of teachers, improvement in the performance of children through remedial education and an increased overall performance of the school. Out of school children surveys are conducted regularly to understand the number of school dropouts, the number of children not enrolled in schools and to develop remedial measures to bring out of school children back to school.SHOW MORE...SHOW LESS

FAQ’s

What is the beneficiary selection criteria?

We use well-defined selection criteria to identify communities who are suffering from poverty and who are vulnerable to internal and external factors that could affect the quality of their lives and education of their children. The socioeconomic condition of the community is one of the primary reasons for selecting the school (type of livelihood, lower literacy rates, higher percentage of dropouts, girl education). The school should be accessible to all the stakeholders (at district level) and should have all-weather road connectivity to ensure monitoring and evaluation of the project. For more information, please see our Process and Protocols HERE.
