The Need

Dotted Line Icon

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic loss of human life worldwide and presents an unprecedented challenge to public health, food systems and the livelihoods of families. The pandemic has had a significant impact on jobs, placing the livelihoods of many families at risk. Lack of access to food and nutrition particularly threatens the most marginalized populations and the poorer members of society are amongst the hardest hit. Daily wagers with no alternate means of earning an income are left unable to make ends meet. Underprivileged families lack access to basic food items and children experience significant gaps in their education. A swift and continued response that ensures that humanitarian assistance reaches those most in need, is critical.

Our Response

Dotted Line Icon

Based on our past experience in crisis management and thorough fast-tracked needs assessment, we divided our COVID strategy into three parts – awareness, emergency relief and education. In the early days of the crisis, our experienced ground team quickly mobilized to arrange and distribute Emergency Relief Kits (ERKs) essential food items, sanitation kits, protective masks and informative flyers to low-income families across the far-flung villages and districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Soon after, a Virtual Community Learning Center (VCLC) project was launched to keep students engaged in their studies. More recently, Teach With CHINAR X (TWCx), a volunteer teaching project, was launched to fill the gaps in learning competencies of children and youth.

    Relief – ERK Distribution (Srinagar)

As the situation in Jammu and Kashmir continued to deteriorate, the number of COVID-19 infected cases increased daily. The financial condition of people, especially daily wagers and those who earn hand to mouth, continued to worsen due to the lockdown. In response to the COVID-19 crisis and the need on the ground, we quickly mobilized into an emergency response and relief mode of operation. We conducted a fast-tracked needs assessment, and decided to deliver emergency relief kits to needy families. Our ground team procured and packed essential food items, masks, sanitizers and hygiene products into Emergency Relief Kits (ERKs) which support a family of 5 for one month. Thanks to the tremendous support from our donors, we were able to distribute and deliver hundreds of ERKs each day at the door steps of destitute and needy families. Our ground team followed strict safety protocols and ensured contactless and safe delivery of ERKs at the door steps of the families to ensure their personal safety as well as the safety of the beneficiaries.SHOW MORE...SHOW LESS

Education – Study Packet Distribution (Budgam)

As part of our COVID-19 education response, we distributed study packets to students across various districts of Kashmir (Budgam, Kulgam). These study packets contain worksheets and assignments which help with enhancing student learning abilities. One of our Remote Learning facilitators, Shahzada, guides students on how to fill the worksheets and conducts home visits to check their progress from time to time. Till date, hundreds of study packets have been distributed across various districts of Kashmir. CHINAR International believes that children are the future of our society. Today they are learners, but tomorrow they will be teachers, role models, change agents and nation builders. It is our responsibility to support, guide, carve and shape them to be our future role models and change agents.SHOW MORE...SHOW LESS

    Education – Teach With CHINAR-x

Recently CHINAR International launched Teach With CHINARx (TWCx) - a unique alternative solution that offers students an opportunity to continue their education during COVID-19 or any crisis situation in Kashmir. Our fast-tracked assessment survey showed that only 30% of children have access to online digital learning solutions which are already limited by 2G bandwidth. TWCx provides a solution with minimum dependency on COVID constraints, lockdowns and internet availability and has the opportunity to scale rapidly and reach a large number of children. This program provides students with an alternative schooling environment in the form of a mini classroom in their neighborhood where they can continue their studies and reintegrate back into a formal schooling system once the crisis has passed. It provides volunteers with a unique opportunity to become education leaders, helps students enhance learning outcomes and increases parental participation. The X-factor represents taking a mini classroom to a child while abiding with COVID-19 safety protocols. X also represents the number of children that a volunteer will teach.SHOW MORE...SHOW LESS

Education – Digital Learning Center (Kulgam)

CHINAR International launched our first Digital Learning Center at Malwan village of Kulgam district. Our ground assessment has shown that this area has less than 5% computer literacy. This is because students from this community are unable to afford the monthly cost of vocational courses at private centers. After conducting a thorough selection process, 32 students - both boys and girls from low-income group families were enrolled in the courseSHOW MORE...SHOW LESS
