The Need

Dotted Line Icon

Over the years we have developed strong relationships with the community, local stakeholders, advisors, subject matter experts and NGO partners on ground. Occasionally, areas of intervention or target groups are brought to our attention by resource persons or advisors who are aware of our programs. Some of these fall under our core intervention areas and are included in the program after they pass through the assessment and verification process. Others may be taken up when there is a compelling need on ground to address social problems that exist within a community. We occasionally develop customized strategies for such interventions and categorize them as special/other projects. We also collaborate with other organizations for such projects if required or if they do not fall under our core areas of specialization.

Our Response

In November 2016, we launched a six-month education intervention in Mulwarwan village of Warwan Valley. As part of this long pilot project we arranged winter tuitions for 200 students and provided training workshops to teachers and volunteers involved in the program. We later launched two more tuition centers in Margi and Mingli villages which supported more than 400 students and 14 local volunteers. In December 2017, we installed V-SAT terminals in Mulwarwan village – the first intervention of its kind. This not only allowed us to communicate with the community but it also connected 10,000 people from Warwan Valley to the rest of the world through the internet. As a result of our continuous support and advocacy on ground, the government installed five V-SAT terminals in different parts of the valley. In the year 2018, we partnered with a local organization called Chotay Taray Foundation to provide therapy and rehabilitation services to 50 children with special needs.

    Warwan QE and SBS

Warwan valley located in district Kishtwar is a remote area that remains cutoff from the world for 6 to 7 months every year during winter months. Although the valley is breathtakingly beautiful, it suffers from utmost poverty. This area lacks electricity and hospitals and only has a few schools which are barely operational with almost non existent communication. After conducting a survey in June 2016, CHINAR International launched an education intervention in partnership with Warwan valley Eco-Tourist Society. We started two winter tuition centers in the Mulwaran village, enrolled 146 children and hired 6 teachers so students could continue their education during the 6 months of harsh winter in the valley. This is the first time an intervention of this scale has been attempted in the valley. The community appreciated the support, supplies and expressed the ongoing need for quality education and tuition centers year round.SHOW MORE...SHOW LESS

The Warwan Valley project offers remedial education to children and capacity building to local volunteers with a focus exclusively on enhancing learning competencies. The project is currently operational across three villages of the valley – Margi, Mulwarwan and Mingli. We have also established skill development centers in the valley to train youth in multiple skills so that they become self-reliant. Community mobilization events are held every year to make local masses aware about the importance of education, health and hygiene.SHOW MORE...SHOW LESS

FAQ’s

What is the selection criteria for special projects?

We adhere to comprehensive protocols and guidelines when selecting potential beneficiaries for our programs. Special projects are taken up if there is a compelling need on ground to address social problems that exist within the community. Upon receiving requests for intervention, we conduct an in-depth research, assessment and verification process of identified communities to identify the need on ground and devise potential solutions to address the problem. Presence of local partners, specialization in the field and community participation are all taken into consideration when selecting special intervention projects. For more information, please see our Process and Protocols HERE.
